Student Nutrition

At San José Unified, we believe student nutrition is a key component of a well-rounded education. We constantly strive to meet the nutritional needs of our students while ensuring our schools promote a healthy and active learning environment.
Future Chefs 2026
It’s that exciting time of year again! All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are invited to submit their favorite recipe inspired by any country or culture from around the world. Eight talented students from San José Unified will be selected as finalists to compete in a live cook-off at Gunderson High School on March 10, 2026.
Our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will receive special prizes, and the top winner will go on to represent our district in the Future Chefs National Challenge, where even more fantastic prizes await!
Recipe submissions open December 1, 2025, and close Friday, January 16, 2026. Families may submit recipes through the online portal or drop off a paper copy in the designated Future Chefs box at each elementary school office.
Check out tips for submitting your recipe here: English | Spanish
Please encourage your students to join in—it’s the culinary event of the year!

New! MealViewer for School Menus
Student Nutrition Services is excited to introduce MealViewer, a new platform for accessing school breakfast and lunch menus. With the free website and mobile app, students and families can view daily menus from their phone or computer, check nutrition and allergen details to make safe and healthy choices, favorite and rate meals to share feedback, and receive real-time updates about menu changes. MealViewer makes it simple to stay informed, connected, and confident about school meals.

Complimentary Breakfast and Lunch for All Students
All students are eligible to receive one complimentary breakfast and lunch every school day. We ask families to complete the Household Income form as part of the beginning of the year packet for students because it helps ensure that families and the district receive all the benefits to which they are entitled. If your family falls within specific income levels, you may qualify for prioritization for some San José Unified programs. We will send you a letter confirming your status, which may also be used to qualify for discounts or special pricing for services from outside vendors.
Families are also welcome to complete the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Application which may increase our reimbursement rates from the National School Lunch/School Breakfast programs.
Special Meal Accommodations
In accordance with USDA regulations, substitutions or modifications in school meals are required for children whose disabilities restrict their diets. A child with a disability must be provided food substitutions when that need is supported by a signed form from a licensed physician.
