2026 Leland Music Audition instructions

Starting February 1, sign up for a time and date for auditions, please email Mr. Rodriguez at rgrodriguez@sjusd.org.

If you are currently in the music program at Leland, you will need to audition again. You will have an opportunity to sign up for an audition time during class. 

***Please have the printed and signed form with you when you audition*** 

• Jazz Band- Students auditioning for Jazz Band will need to complete a wind ensemble, orchestra, or choir audition in addition to the jazz band audition. Jazz Band may be 0 period. Jazz band application Jazz Band 2026 Instructions
• Wind Ensemble- Please prepare the following audition piece located in the folder. 2023 Set A You must be logged into your SJUSD account to access this folder (due to copyright regulations). Please be able to play the following scales in eighth notes at quarter note = 120, Concerts B, E, A, D. Students will be selected and placed in wind ensemble based on ability and need. Students who do not make Wind Ensemble will automatically be placed into Concert Band. Band Commitment form
• Concert Band- Please be able to perform Concert Bb, Eb, and F scales on your instrument. Prepare a piece of music from Standard of Excellence book 2 (the blue book). Band Commitment form
• Chamber Chorale- Audition required for 2026 school year.  Please prepare your specific voice part for I Have longed For Thy Saving Health by William Byrd I_have_longed.pdf. You will also be asked to vocalise your range, match pitches, and sightread. The amount of people accepted into this class will depend on the amount of each voice part who auditions to make a balanced choir. Chamber Chorale Commitment form 2026

• If you are unable to play this as an audition, but would like to be in orchestra, prepare something that demonstrates your current level. Orchestra Commitment form.

Leadership Class:

Offered 3rd or 4th period.  Must either be elected (run for class or school officer) or selected (apply, complete work, audition) to the course.  

• Accept all grades.  
• No previous Leadership class enrollment required. 

Fill out this interest form. You will be contacted with further instructions based on your selection on the form. 

The course is available as a 7th period class called Advanced Drama.

There is no application required, as there is a space for all!!

If you would like to be a member of the Advanced Journalism program, please read and fill out the following form and have your current English or Art teacher complete the attached form. Please understand that Advanced Journalism is a class for which you will receive a grade based on the quality of your work. 

The following roles are available: 

• Staff Writer: responsible for researching and writing articles, interviewing students, and obtaining quotes
• Artist: responsible for drawing digital art for the articles (no prior digital art experience needed)
• Photographer: responsible for taking pictures of sports games, featured students, and other events to accompany articles and social media posts
• Media Team: responsible for making posts for social media/website and improving outreach

Speech & Debate:

All new and returning students must apply/reapply to the class every year.  No previous experience required.  All applications are due by February 28, 2026 and must be emailed to lsdapplications2627@gmail.com.  Students must compete at speech and debate tournaments - often held on weekends - in order to pass the class.  In order to compete at speech and debate tournaments, students must be enrolled in the class.  New student applications can be found here.  Returning student applications can be found here.

Yearbook:

• Yearbook 1-2 - earns elective credits for SJUSD and UC/CSU, not VPA credits
• Advanced Yearbook

All new students must apply to the class each year. Students will fill application forms and set up an interview with the current yearbook staff. Interviews are conducted during tutorials and after school. Department options include Design, Photography, Writing, and Marketing. Sample work is requested for new applicants as related to preferred department (ie. photo portfolio, writing samples, design portfolio). See application for specifics. The course can be repeated with additional responsibilities and leadership opportunities. New student applications can be found here.
