***We will be having another CULTURE DAY on Friday, June 6th. Please bring a food that represents your culture.  You do not have to bring enough for everyone to have a lot. Just a taste will do.  The more variety we have, the more valuable the experience will be so I encourage you all to bring something!  Feel free to drop food off in the morning but remember- we have no way to reheat or to keep food cold.

Friday, May 16th:  South Asia Geography (list of features you need to know).

 

Also due Friday, May 16th:  Read and answer questions 1-6 for textbook Chapter 29, Section 2.  There will be a short reading quiz tomorrow as well.

 

Extra Credit Opportunities:

  1. Due Wednesday, May 28th:  Create a poster on Taoism or Confucianism from eastern Asia.  You are not eligible to do this if you made a poster about Hinduism, Buddhism or Islam for South Asia.  Include the major features of the religion including practices, traditions, beliefs, teachings etc.  Also include images of symbols, the founder(s), art/architecture, etc.  You must also include a saying or quote from the teachings.  Up to 15 points available.
  2. Due Friday, June 6th:  Have a meal at a restaurant, or someoneÕs home, from a different culture than your own.  No chain restaurants!  Try to find an authentic restaurant serving food from a region of the world we have studied.  Write a paragraph about your experience.  What did you learn about the culture through the food and the experience?  Up to 10 points available.  Try to pick something youÕve never had before so that this is a unique and interesting experience.  Go with an open mind!
  3. Due Friday, June 6th:  Write a one page researched response about one of the following topics relating to the Grameen Bank:

-The growth and impact of microcredit around the world

-The changing role of Muslim women in Bangladesh

         Up to 15 points are available.

4.  Visit Hakone Gardens (Japanese Tea Gardens) in Saratoga.  Walk around, read the information provided, and write a one-paragraph reflection about what you learned about the Japanese culture reflected in this American replica.  Up to 15 points possible.

 

Due Wednesday, May 21st:  Read Chapter 29, Section 3 and answer questions 1-6 on page 587.

 

Due Wednesday, May 28th:  Read the Final Research Project Assignment.  See me if you have questions.  Follow all the directions!!!!  And take your library books back to the library.

 

Due Thursday, May 22nd: 

  1. Look up information on the Grameen Bank on www.grameenfoundation.org -- click on the blue links at the top of the page to find out more about the organization.
  2. Write a paragraph to explain the impacts the Grameen Bank has had on the people of Bangladesh and the prospects for future economic development in Bangladesh as a result of the BankÕs work.  Also write about where else (in the world) a program like this might be beneficial and why. Use at least three concrete details or facts to support each of your explanations. You should be do this in 7-10 sentences.  ***First period: this is a change.  I told you 5 sentences but you wonÕt be able to write about all of this in 5 so make it 7-10.

 

Due Friday, May 23rd:

Complete Regional Atlas green circle questions on beginning on page 596.  Skip page 601- you can read about Australia but you donÕt have to answer the questions.  Write in complete sentences.

 

Due Tuesday, May 27th: 

Read Chapter 31, Section 2.  Answer questions 1-7 on page 624.  Use complete sentences.

 

Due Friday, May 30th: Maps and Map Test
