Today students listed to Mrs.
Imerson talk about the Sculpture greensheet. They were also given
a letter to take home to their parents. Tonight they will sign the behavior expectations themselves and have their parents look over the green sheet and get their signatures also. If time permits they will purchase a 5x7 spiral bound sketchbook and get their parents to write a check to Leland for $40.00 for the materials fee. |

cooperative learning project using balsa foam
sticks. |
| August 30, 2007 |
As a group evaluate your
stick/paper sculpture that you made yesterday using the following criteria. After you finish answering the 5 questions in the critique turn it in and get materials for the following project: As a team explore the possibilities of what forms you can createwith clay. Decide together on a concept which uses everyones talents in one sculpture. Grading will be based on inventiveness ("out of the box" thinking). Remember there is no right or wrong answer. Please consider repetition, texture, and a sense of movement when you start your work. Remember that clay has a wonderful quality called PLASTICITY! Clay is very maleable, and easily shaped. You will also notice that the clay begins to dry rapidly from the air in the room and the warmth of your hands. |
| August 31, 2007 |
1. Mrs. Imerson handed
back the critique student's handed in yesterday for their stick/paper
projects with comments on them. She then asked students to put a
1-10 set of points for cooperative work skills, out of the box design,
and use of line. She also asked them to write a
critique for the clay project they did yesterday and put points on
the cooperative work, "out of the box" design, and whether their work
shows movement using the plasticity of the clay. 2. Students were shown examples of tiny stamps that they will be carving and asked to evaluate them for certain qualities. Students then began making sketches of ideas for their own stamp they will make Tuesday next week. |

NO SCHOOL LABOR DAY |
| Sept. 4, 2007 |
1. Refine stamp design. 2. Get design approved. 3. Receive clay to begin stamp. Students were reminded of the stamp requirements: 1. It should be an elegant tiny sculpture (the form such as a cube, pyramid, cylinder, etc. is important) 2. For top points it should have carvings on the different sides (such as on the top, bottom and side if it is a cylinder) 3. Have your full name on it (neatly) 4. It should be small! one inch on all sides 5. Pay attention to careful craftsmanship as you carve. 6. It is carving only! No attached pieces. |
| Sept. 5, 2007 |
1. Continue stamps-pay
attention to the craftsmanship 2. Notice clay quality-leather dry is cold to the touch and easy to carve. 3. You can continue your stamp work tomorrow. 4. Next project sphere using symbols. Mrs. Imerson showed some examples. |
| Sept. 6, 2007 |
1. Brainstorm ideas for
sphere. try at least 3 different ideas-one turning the sphere
into an animal, another turning it into a head and the third using
symbols and designs. 2. Presentation: A Brief History of Sculpture including the 3FUNDAMENTALS OF SCULPTURE-technique, form and content. HOMEWORK DUE TOMORROW! GO TO THIS SITE and print out the elements and principles. |

our stamps that came out of the kiln today. 2. Evaluate our stamp, with the requirements. You will evaluate your own work and that of the other students at your table. I will also grade the stamps. 3. Many students had trouble getting to this site last night so students were told to try: http://leland.sjusd.org/~dimerson 4. Mrs. Imerson went over the homework again. Students are to print out the elements and principles and also the illustrated elements and then create their own illustrated principles. She also talked of what an A student is and that an A student shows creative evidence beyond initial task (such as looking for resources onthe web or ideas for their sphere. Students are encouraged to bring in items off the web to inspire ideas for symbols, animals or emotions. |
| Sept. 10, 2007 |
1. Make test tiles if you
were absent Friday tomorrow. 2. Evaluate stamp if you were absent Friday tomorrow. 3. 1. What is glaze? It
is chemicals and minerals in a liquid suspension that melt over the
surface of the clay at a certain temperature and give a finished look
to the ceramic piece. 2. What types of glaze to we have to use? a. gloss- shiney b. matt-dull shine c. transparent (you can see the clay body through it-good for over words you want to see on the clay project d. under glazes-color only-no shine-good for painting pictures you don't want to run-regular glazes will run with gravity 3. Which colors need a special temperature? the bright reds fire at a lower temperature you must put all the other colors on your project and fire it then take it out put the red on and refire. 4. Most colors call for 3 coats. The exception is reds which need four coats. The underglazes need a clear coat over the top or it will look like you painted the bisqueware with water colors. 5. WASC visitation First and Second periods will view another movie leading into pop art on George Segal Third period will critique their balsa foam carvings using the 4 actions of Art Criticism: Describing, Analysing, Interpreting using the sheet that explains the 3 aesthetic theories and Evaluating using craftsmanship, creativity, and effort. Students were asked to bring in visuals of food as resources for the next project which is using clay to make a realistic sculpture of food. |
| 3/4/08 |
WASC visitation Critique today which is part of the visual arts standard 4.0 aesthetic valuing. We are in transition-so we will also read magazine articles on Jim Dine and Jasper Johns both important artists from the pop art movement. There are a set of questions for each article and these need to be turned in by Thursday for the grading period. |
| 3/5/08 |
Students will continue to finish
up painting, critiquing and reading magazine articles. the will use the four actions of art criticism 1. Describe-what things are in your balsa foam? works/people/objecgs/animals 2. Analyze-how are the elements of line, shape, form, texture, space and value used? How are the principles of umity pattern, rhythm, variety, balance, emphasis and proportion used? Did yo repeat shapes to create a pattern? 3. Interpret-what are your trying to express-an emotion-something you like? What is going on in the carving? 4. Decide-what do you think about this artwork? Do you like it? Why or why not? How do you feel about whether you were successful in conveying an idea? To better understand abut deciding a out how you feel ab out an artwork, it may help to take a look at the tghree common aesthetic theories below. 3 COMMON AESTHETIC THEORIES Is the artwork successful because: Imitationalism/Realism-the artist rendered the images in a realistic manner. It is easy to discern the sdubject because of the realistic quality of the art. Formalism/Composition-the artist was adept in using the elements and principles of design in the artwork. (This also refers to the placement, contrast, and interaction of all parts of ghe work.) Emotionalism/Feelings-the artist did a good jo of evoking an emotion or feeling from me. |
