History

  Founded:  Founded in 1967, Leland High School is one of seven high schools in the San Jose                    Unified School District.

  Type: Public, 4-year dedicated magnet school with an emphasis in communications.

  Enrollment: 1820

  Accreditation: In 2002, Leland received a clear six year accreditation from the                           Western  Association of Schools and Colleges.

  Honors:  Leland has been named a NCLB National Blue Ribbon School, a New American High                   School National Showcase Site, a California Distinguished High School for academic                   success, and a 2003 state award winner for Career and Technical Education.

  Location: Leland is located in the Almaden Valley, thirteen miles south of downtown San Jose,                   California. The large majority of parents are college educated and the expectation is                   that most students will attend college.

  Vision:     Leland High School, a leader in communications and technology, challenges and                       empowers students to shape the future in an ever-changing global landscape through                   developing creative thought, providing multi-faceted learning opportunities and fostering                    reciprocal partnerships. Leland’s legacy is lifelong learning.

  Composition of Student Body

  Geographical:  San Jose Unified operates under a school choice plan whereby parents make                             secondary school selections. Because of its academic reputation, Leland has
                            been consistently at capacity with a long waiting list.

  Ethnicity: Leland takes pride in its ethnic and cultural diversity. Leland’s student body boasts                   twenty-nine different languages.

                              Black = 1%                       Indian = 2%                          other = 2%
                *Included in this population is a substantial number of Persian, Assyrian, and East                   Indian students.

Testing Statistics

  Advanced: In 2006, 413 Leland students took a total of 877 Advanced Placement tests.                   Seventy-nine percent of the Placement scores were three or above, with 29% scoring
                  a five. The school average score was a 3.94, while 177 students qualified as AP                   Scholars.

  SAT/PSAT:  In 2005-2006, 385 students took the SAT. The mean SAT verbal score was                    561, the mean SAT math score was 612 and the mean writing score was 569. The                    California state means are 504V/522M/501W.
                   The National means are 508V/520M/497W.

  California Assessment : Leland’s California State Index score for 2006 was 859, resulting in a                    classification of a Very High Assessment Performing School. In 2006, 99.6% of                    Leland students graduated.

Academic Profile

  Post Secondary: Approximately ninety-five percent of Leland’s graduates enroll in colleges and                               universities while 86% were UC/CSU eligible. Of that percentage, sixty-eight                               percent enter four-year colleges and universities (33% to the University of                               California system). Twenty-two percent enter the California State University                               system, twelve percent enter private and out of state universities, and                               twenty-seven percent enter community colleges.

  Grading: Students are ranked by semester marks earned in grades 9, 10, 11,12. Subjects are
                  not weighted. GPA is calculated with an A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1. Forty percent of                   Leland’s student body carries a GPA of 3.5 or above.

  Peer Tutoring: Fully accreditated high school tutor program

  Athletics: Fifty-one Men’s/ Women’s Central Coast Championships since 1967.
                   For 2005-2006 school year the Blossom Valley Athletic League awarded Leland High                    School the “Best of the Best” award, given to the member school that had the highest                    overall results in all sports in league play.
